St. Joseph Seminary
St. Joseph Seminary is a Roman Catholic seminary located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The seminary is a place for men who think that God’s plan for them might be to serve the Church as a diocesan priest.
In a supportive community atmosphere, St. Joseph’s seeks to reproduce that first seminary experience that the apostles had with Jesus himself: living with him, eating with him, listening to him and asking him questions, travelling with him, and gradually being prepared by him for a share in his mission. In accordance with the Sulpician teaching tradition, the members of the seminary Formation Team and the seminarians live together in a fraternal community.
Seminarians receive much of their academic education at Newman Theological College, which is located on the same campus overlooking Edmonton’s beautiful river valley. Courses at Newman emphasize academic excellence, but also integrate the human and spiritual development of the student.
The current campus was completed in 2011, and St. Joseph Seminary has operated since 1927. More than 500 of our graduates have been ordained to the priesthood.
Newman Theological College
Newman Theological College was founded in 1969 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, Alberta. NTC grew out of the existing structure of St. Joseph Seminary which had already opened its doors in 1967 to lay people and religious for the study of theology. NTC is a private, Catholic academic institution dedicated to the study of theology and related disciplines. NTC has been an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada since 1992.
NTC carries out its mission for the Church in an ongoing partnership with St. Joseph Seminary (SJS) whose particular mission is the human, spiritual and pastoral formation of future diocesan priests. Both institutions remain distinct, interdependent, and complementary. Lay men and women, diocesan clergy from Western Canada, along with several religious orders of men and consecrated women work together to fulfill the mission of NTC. In this way, NTC is infused with the life-giving collaboration of all members of the Body of Christ that is the beauty and grace of the Church.
